THE CHICKENS

Free range, very free — the rooster goes wherever he wants

Free range, very free

They cross the basalt, wander the garden, and lay the eggs. Flash loved baby chickens. The flock is part of why this place exists — not livestock inventory, residents with opinions.

The rooster goes wherever he wants. Nobody has told him otherwise.

Dinner at five

Every chicken in the neighborhood knows we feed at 5pm. Ours, the neighbors’, birds that just happen to be walking by — when the bucket comes out, they show up.

It is not a schedule we invented for a brochure. It is the time they learned, and they keep it better than most people keep appointments.

Eggs, and then some

Cartons fill up. Chicks stay close to the hen. Dogs watch from a polite distance. The yard is loud in a good way.

If you visit the farm by request, you will meet the flock on their terms — usually somewhere between the garden and the feed bucket.

People ask

Are the chickens free range?

Yes. They wander the garden and cross the volcanic rock. The rooster sets his own schedule.

When do you feed them?

5pm. Every chicken in the neighborhood knows. Show up around then and you will see why.

Can I meet the chickens?

Private farm visits by request — write first. Do not show up unannounced.
